Is rooftop solar worth it in Angul & Dhenkanal? The real numbers

We did the maths for a typical Odisha home so you don't have to — here's what solar really costs, saves and returns.

"Is solar actually worth it, or is it just hype?" It's the first question almost every homeowner asks us. The honest answer for Odisha is: yes — and the numbers make it obvious. Let's walk through a real example.

Our example household

Take a typical family home in Angul or Dhenkanal with a monthly electricity bill of around ₹3,000. That works out to roughly 450–500 units a month. To cover most of that, you'd want about a 3 kW rooftop system.

The cost — before and after subsidy

ItemAmount
3 kW system (approx.)₹1,80,000
Central subsidy (PM Surya Ghar)− ₹78,000
Odisha State subsidy− ₹60,000
Your net cost≈ ₹42,000
The subsidy changes everything. A combined government grant of ₹1,38,000 (Central ₹78,000 + Odisha State ₹60,000) covers more than two-thirds of the cost — money paid straight into your bank account.

What you save

In sunny Odisha, a 3 kW system generates roughly 360–400 units a month. With net metering, that offsets most or all of your bill:

  • Monthly savings: around ₹2,300–₹2,600
  • Yearly savings: roughly ₹28,000–₹31,000
  • Payback period: about 1.5 years on your net cost (after both subsidies)
  • 25-year savings: well over ₹6–7 lakh, even allowing for panel ageing

So… is it worth it?

Think of it this way: you spend well under ₹50,000 once, recover it in around a year and a half, and then enjoy two decades of almost-free electricity — while shielding yourself from every future tariff hike. Few investments offer a return like that, with almost no risk.

Solar isn't an expense — it's prepaying 25 years of electricity at a steep discount, with the government chipping in.

Beyond the rupees

  • Protection from rising grid tariffs, year after year.
  • Reliable power and reduced dependence on the grid.
  • A meaningful cut in your household's carbon footprint.
  • Higher property value and a modern, future-ready home.
