Net metering in Odisha explained: turn sunshine into bill credits

The simple mechanism that lets your rooftop sell surplus power back to the grid — and makes your system pay for itself faster.

Your solar panels produce the most power in the middle of the day — often more than your home is using at that moment. So what happens to the extra? With net metering, it doesn't go to waste: it flows back into the grid and earns you credit. This is the key to maximising your savings.

What is net metering?

Net metering replaces your old electricity meter with a bidirectional meter that records electricity flowing in both directions:

  • When your panels produce more than you use, the surplus is exported to the grid and the meter runs backward.
  • At night or on cloudy days, you import power from the grid as usual.
  • Your bill is based on the net — what you imported minus what you exported.
Think of the grid as a giant battery. You deposit surplus units during the day and withdraw them at night — paying only for the difference.

A simple example

Say in a month your 3 kW system generates 360 units, while your home consumes 400 units. You import 400 but export, say, 200 of your daytime surplus. Your net billed consumption is just 200 units — so your bill roughly halves, and in many homes it shrinks even further.

Every unit you export is a unit you don't pay for later. Net metering is what turns a good solar system into a great one.

How to get net metering in Odisha

Net metering is approved by your distribution company (DISCOM) — TPNODL or TPCODL, depending on your area. The steps are:

  • Apply to your DISCOM (usually alongside your PM Surya Ghar application).
  • Get technical feasibility approval for your connection.
  • Install the rooftop system through a registered vendor.
  • The DISCOM inspects and installs the bidirectional meter.
  • Your system is commissioned and credits begin.

It sounds like a lot — but at Jaypee Solar, the net-metering application and DISCOM coordination are part of our standard service. You won't have to chase a single approval.

Net metering vs your battery

For most grid-connected homes, net metering is more economical than adding expensive batteries — the grid effectively stores your surplus for free. Batteries make sense mainly where backup during outages is a priority. We'll advise what's right for you.

Note: net-metering policies and limits are set by the regulator and DISCOM and can change. We'll confirm the current rules for your connection.
